Improve Flexible Packaging Recyclability
with Multi-Material Film Detection
A Simple Step Toward Design-for-Recycling
Many flexible packaging formats are made of complex film structures. With the trinamiX application, three types can be distinguished: (1) Mono-material films such as PE, PP, PET, or PA; (2) PE-based films containing a quantifiable percentage of PA (polyamide); and (3) all other blends or multilayers are classified as non-mono-material. While these combinations often improve functionality, they can also prevent proper recycling if not designed accordingly.
Modern recycling systems require clean, mono-material input. Multi-material packaging that cannot be sorted or separated leads to contamination, downcycling, or incineration.
trinamiX offers a fast, portable way to test and identify complex film compositions — right at your desk, lab, or sorting facility.
Identify Multi-Material Structures in Seconds
With our mobile NIR spectroscopy solution, you can detect flexible films and classify them into three groups - making it easier to design for recyclability and pass compliance checks. This classification supports common packaging compliance workflows, including:
- CEFLEX guidelines
- RecyClass assessments
- PPWR compliance (recyclable packaging by design)
Practical Use Cases
- R&D: Check new materials or prototypes for recyclability compatibility
- Packaging Design: Evaluate which combinations trigger detectability issues
- Client Reporting: Deliver documented evidence of material makeup
- Converter QA: Spot mixed input films before they enter your supply chain and avoid false recyclability claims
How It Works
trinamiX uses NIR spectroscopy combined with a tailored chemometric model to distinguish different polymer types and detect multi-material blends. The handheld scanner is operated via app, and delivers results within seconds.
Typical output: “PE/PA film, PA content: 17%”
No need to send samples to a lab. No delays. This enables in-house recyclability validation with immediate results — ideal for PPWR documentation and RecyClass pre-checks.
